With continuous use in cars with dirty engines, the cleaning power of Amoco Ultimate help remove carbonaceous deposits to improve efficiency and combustion. This cleaning power helps to reduce the emissions from unburned hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides (NOx; precursors to ground-level ozone). In fleet tests, vehicles were driven on a regular fuel with minimum detergency until the engines were "dirty" (as measured by intake valve rating), and the emissions were measured using a standard test fuel. Then the vehicles were driven exclusively on Amoco Ultimate gasoline. At set mileage accumulation points (e.g., after 2,000, 4,000, 7,000 and 10,000 miles), the emissions were measured using the same standard test fuel. The difference in emissions at a given mileage compared to the emissions at the start of the test when the engines were "dirty" gives an indication of the impact on emissions performance from engine cleanup using Amoco Ultimate fuel.
