Planning a road trip? There are apps for that. So whether you prefer to hit the highways with a well-planned itinerary or just jump in your car with destiny as your destination, the following apps can upgrade your adventure.

Nothing spoils a road trip like gridlock. Fortunately, navigation apps like Waze let you join forces with an entire community of nearby drivers to outsmart traffic.

If you'd like to be better informed of local culture, offbeat hotels and scenic points throughout the U.S., try Roadtrippers. Complete with over 60,000 suggestions of unique and memorable places to visit, Roadtrippers can help you to take in the lesser-known sights that might otherwise get overlooked.

Fodor's has been publishing travel guides since the 1930s, and now the Fodor's City Guides app places a multitude of maps and recommendations in the palm of your hand. This app currently covers just 17 cities in North America and Europe, more destinations are coming soon.

Oh, Ranger® ParkFinder is perfect for the moments when you need to get off the highway and onto a trail. The great outdoors usually isn't far away, but this app can help you find its entry points.

Use Postagram to convert your favorite smartphone snapshots into non-digital postcards that are delivered via the USPS. After several complimentary starter cards, each card you send costs $.99 (roughly the price of a traditional postcard). and you can even add an optional 180-character message.

So before you get your motor running and head out on the highway, take a few moments to pack a few apps. They're light, they're portable, and they'll help make this one of the smartest road trips you've ever had.
